On 8 February 1978 the Warragul & District Lapidary Club was formed at Nilma by a group of enthusiastic Rockhounds wishing to promote the art of Lapidary. Workshops were first held at the home of Cliff Crosman, one of the founding members.
In 1998 a plot of land in the Logan Park Show Grounds was leased to the Club by the Baw Baw Shire, on which a new Clubroom was built by members, and after 21 years members could enjoy their hobby in a new, very up to date workshop and facilities which include cutting, grinding and polishing wheels, a faceting machine and silver smithing and enamelling workbenches.
In 2003 a new saw room was built onto the existing club rooms, enabling club members to cut large rocks with a 24” diamond saw. The Clubrooms also houses a large collection of minerals and gemstones as well as a spectacular display of unusual fluorescent minerals.
The aim of the Club is to promote and foster the art of Lapidary craft in all its forms, including: silver smithing, wire wrapping, enameling, beading, cutting and polishing gem stones (cabochons), faceting, and to foster the interest and participation of people interested in taking up this great hobby. Courses, demonstrations and field trips are regularly organised for interested members.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the workshop during opening hours (see below), to watch Club Members plying their craft.
